IP based Multi-Platform News and Media Center

Qvest Media, a leading global systems architect and ICT integrator, has been selected by Asharq News Services Limited to build a multi-platform news and media centre in Dubai’s financial centre. This project is the first in the MENA region where the media infrastructure is based entirely on IP technology. The use of virtualized on-premise systems and cloud applications as a hybrid architecture for content aggregation, production and distribution also plays a central role. HMS provides Bloomberg Asharq with its service-based compliance recording solution Infinity, which integrates seamlessly into the entire IP-based infrastructure and records program content according to the SMPTE 2110 standard. The recordings and all TV programs made available in the channel’s internal IPTV network are viewed via a web-based IPTV / VOD client developed by HMS. 300 – 400 editors will simultaneously access the content via the IPTV backend. Infinity was developed according to the SOA principle and can be virtualized, operated in data centers or in the public cloud.

New Studio and Playout

TV Trwam is a Catholic television programme in Poland that has been in existence since 2003 and is supported by the Fundacja Lux Veritatis Foundation. The station’s founders are also instrumental in managing Radio Maryja, a worldwide Catholic radio station. The programme content is broadcasted in Polish and is directed via cable, satellite and Internet to Catholic-conservative recipients at home and abroad. The foundation commissioned HMS with the renewal of the broadcasting and studio technology, at the end of which the switch from SD to HD will take place. The conversion will be carried out without interrupting broadcasting operations and also includes the renewal of the post-production, archive and central MAM. TV TRWAM has one main studio and 3 outside studios, which are used for live feeds. The aim is the central control, the shutdown and the recording of programmes in the individual studios from the main control room. Using modern technologies such as NDI or WebRTC, the respective contents of the outdoor studios can be viewed centrally in real time without having to fundamentally renew the existing network infrastructure. HMS provides its production playout/ ingest solution ClipBox/CaptureBox. For the 24/7 program playout HMS uses its successful broadcast automation solution DiSA including program planning modules. including program planning modules. Equipped with long-term and short-term planning, ingest modules, graphic support, transport stream encoder and DVB multiplexer, the broadcaster relies on the software-based channel-in-a-box technology with which the broadcast signal is transferred to the distribution channels ready for use.

TV-as-a-Service

Swisscom Broadcast AG provides all services for the distribution of broadcast signals and also supplies ready-made solutions for IPTV and Web-TV. Part of these services is the operation of an in-house playout center. For the product packaged and managed as a TV-as-a-service, HMS supplied playout automation for more than 20 television channels and its own loop channels. These were completely integrated into the virtualised infrastructure of Swisscom Broadcast and deliver a finished digital broadcast signal (SPTS) to the IPTV platform at the output. The most recent joint expansion of the SaaS platform is aimed at optimizing the internal deployment processes in order to be able to serve the large number of requests to a managed playout solution on time. The aim of this strategy based on self-deployment and SOA is not least an even more efficient utilization of resources, which will also be positively reflected in the offerings of Swisscom Broadcast.

New Studio Automation, New Editorial Workflows

Qvest Media, a worldwide leading system architect and ICT integrator, was commissioned by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) to equip the broadcaster with new studio automation systems. Qvest Media integrates automation solutions individually tailored to the broadcaster’s work processes to control five control rooms in the Vienna ORF centre. In addition to the technical integration into the existing infrastructure of the control rooms and studios and the connection to the Redsys editorial system from APA-IT used by ORF, special attention is paid to the intuitive operability of the automation and its mapping in future editorial workflows. In order to ensure this elementary point, the Qvest Media subsidiary HMS media solutions adapted its autonomous, platform-independent HMS DiSA Brick controller according to ORF requirements and embeded it as a technology layer between the editorial system and the Vizrt automation systems (Mosart and Opus). This allows editors to concentrate fully on the creation of articles and the planning of broadcasts in the editorial system. In the background, the brick controller supports the ORF staff in ensuring that every story is correctly implemented on the technical side within the programme flow, without the editors having to have special detailed knowledge.

More Channels, More Excitement

Teleclub is one of the first pay TV stations in Europe. The station was founded in Switzerland in 1982 and broadcasted its programme in Germany from 1984 to 1991. Today, Teleclub can only be received in Switzerland. Via its subsidiary CT Cinetrade, Teleclub AG is wholly owned by Swisscom. TeleClub relies on channel-in-a-box technology from HMS for the expansion of its programme offering by a further 6 fiction channels. The aim was to integrate an efficient, highly integrated automation solution into the existing infrastructure. Modern interfaces such as RESTful APIs were used for the integration. 4 multi-channel playout servers were installed, which fully redundantly map the 6 channels, one shared memory and two servers for automation. The broadcast lists are delivered via the CreateCtrl AG traffic system, the media come from the Oracle DIVA archive. DiSA’s own graphics engine adds the required graphics. An HMS ClipBox playout channel with specially adapted program transfer from the traffic system was installed for material viewing. All fiction channels broadcast their content in several languages and multi-channel sound, which could be achieved with the DiSA solution through integrated modules (APTO Loudness Control, dynamic DOLBY® 5.1 / 2.0 switching, ProLogic Downmix, …) without additional, downstream software. Teletext and teletext subtitles are still added to all channels via channel-in-a-box technology. Also completely in software and without additional inserters.
